2009-ben a „Stand Up Against Poverty” kezdeményezés világszerte közel 173 millió embert mozgatott meg, amellyel a világtörténelem eddigi legnagyobb egyidőben szervezett civil megmozdulása volt.

PRESS RELEASE

Amnesty International joins global action Stand Up Against Poverty

Amnesty International joins the spectacular campaign organized by young people, non-governmental organizations and responsible citizens to stand up for the Millenium Development Goals at the time of the UN General Assembly in New York: on 17th September 2010 at 5 p.m. at the Erzsébet Square in Budapest!

In year 2000, 190 UN member states made the concrete promise to end hunger and significantly reduce the number of those living in poverty with joint efforts by year 2015 (Millenium Development Goals). The countries of the world – including Hungary – committed to guarantee human rights for everyone, promote gender equality, take effective measures to reduce child mortality, combat HIV/AIDS, ensure enviromental sustainability, help make primary education available for children in the countries of the Global South, guarantee safe drinking water for everyone and develop a global partnership for development.

In 2010 we have arrived at the last five years to fulfill these promises. Unfortunately, the number of those who suffer form hunger and malnutrition in the world has not fallen but risen from 7-800 million to 1.2 billion in the last ten years; due to the failure of action, nearly 4 million children have died as a consequence of poverty and there are still 6-7000 victims of HIV/AIDS per day. Still at present, several million people do not have access to basic health care, millions of children have no access to primary education and one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. On 20 -22 September, world leaders gather at the UN General Assembly in New York to assess their efforts done so far towards achieving the Millenium Development Goals and to review their policies up to the present.

The Hungarian youth, non-governmental organizations and responsible citizens join the global campaign, Stand Up Against Poverty this year to draw the attention of the world’s governments to fulfill their promises: to tackle social inequalities and to eradicate poverty! The event on 17th September is part of the programs of 2010 – European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion (www.2010againstpoverty.eu), the UN Millenium Campaign (www.standagainstpoverty.org) and the actions of the global movement called GCAP – Global Call to Action against Poverty (www.whiteband.org) , a network of nearly 1000 non-governmental organizations in more than 100 countries of the world, with global fights against poverty as its main purpose.

In 2009, the “Stand Up Against Poverty” initiative moved about 173 million people worldwide, becoming the largest civilian same-time lobby action in the world. This year, Budapest joins the action, with about 1500 young participants expected and several public personalities holding speeches (Kriszta Bódis, UNICEF ambassadors, Dóra Elek, the face of Year Against Poverty, the winner of the ad-competition Arc and a representative of Amnesty International) The host of the evening will be Péter Novák, and the band Irie Maffia will have a concert. In closure of the event the participants will symbollically “stand up” for the Millenium Development Goals and raise colored balloons into the sky.
