Samdech Hun Sen
Office of the Prime Minister
Jok Dimitrov Boulevard
I am writing to you urging the release of the well-know human rights defender and activist Tep Vanny. She was arrested on 16 August 2016 and has been in jail since then. In less than a year, she has undergone three separate court proceedings with another still pending. The Cambodian authorities are going to extraordinary lengths to ensure that she remains in prison and are therefore sending a chilling message to other human rights defenders and activists. Imprisoned for simply exercising her rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, she is a prisoner of conscience.
I call upon the Cambodian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release her and to drop all charges against her. I also urge the authorities to publicly condemn and order an end to harassment and violence against human rights defenders in Cambodia.
